After...

4 years
4 months
and
3 days.

Today is the day!

The day we have looked forward to.The day we at times wondered if it would ever happen.
The day that always seemed so distant and unattainable.

This afternoon we will appear in a courtroom, stand before a judge, and promise to take care of these three little people for always.
Today in the eyes of the state we will become a family.

In our hearts we have always been a family.
I am ready for this final step.
To complete this adoption journey.
To simply be a family.

What made you decide ...

What made you decided to adopt these three children?
Of all the children you have had in placement why these three?
At your age, what were you thinking?

Those questions and many others have been posed to me over the past few years. I myself have wondered that very thing. I don't think there has been a child placed in my home that I didn't want to protect, love, and keep, but always I understood they simply were not mine to keep. The time I spent with them was never mine to decide. This placement began as any other with a phone call, a bit of information, and then the wait for them to arrive. Ordinary. For us.

Did I know how much my life would change when those two tiny children walked thru my door?, of course not.
From the moment I knelt down and looked into the biggest brown eyes, filled with fear and simply said "It's going to be ok" something connected with that little boy.
When I turned to his baby sister and unwrapped her from her blankets, seeing for the first time the bandages, the bruises, this tiny, injured, fragile baby, my need to protect responded.
Before adoption became a word we even uttered out loud, my heart knew I was suppose to be their mom.

God knew.

I no longer question why children arrive at our door. At that moment there is something they need that we are able to provide. So often we too gain something in return. Often I find I have learned a necessary skill, or lesson with each child I meet and share time with. It is safe to say I am a better person for having known them.
God knew this too.

The decision to adopt for me, was instant. I remember well a conversation, with their case manager, filled with terms I had never heard before and knowing before the conversation was over what my decision would be. I think I surprised her when I said "If it goes to that point we will adopt" Before talking to Kevin,or our older kids I made that statement knowing it was right for us. Saying "We will adopt" was as normal as taking a breath. It is most telling that when I spoke to Kevin, before I finished my sentence he too said "Of course we are adopting" and when we talked with the older three, unsure of what their response would be they too, were unanimous in the course we would travel. We had known those little ones for less than three months, and at that time we knew nothing about the baby that would arrive during the summer.I just knew in my heart we were suppose to do this.

Of course God knew

With that decision came questions. I found I would over time often...
Question my sanity.
Question the judicial system.
The people in charge.
Myself.
Countless times before this journey was complete. And I did. Just in case you think I am noble or saintly let me clarify a few things for you. One can know in one's heart what you are suppose to do. One can also question that knowledge in many varied and creative ways. I did have moments at first where I wondered what have I just agreed to do? I found myself thinking....
I am almost done raising babies, who decides to start over.
I am 40, what am I thinking. (this was uttered often when Rosie was a newborn and I discovered that I rather liked sleeping at night)
I will never travel now.
I will never be able to go back to school.
I will be giving up "my" life to raise more little lives.

are you noticing the "I" theme happening here. I think perhaps for me the hardest thing to give up (in my mind I figured I was giving it up) was the life I had envisioned once I had finished raising babies. (translation they graduated from high school) I had gone thru a period when my older three were toddlers where I felt as tho I had given up the life I had imagined just to simply raise babies (silly I know) at one point I realized that I hadn't really given it up I had just put it on pause...when those babies graduated I would be very young and then I could follow those dreams I had felt were important. Ok so it took me a long while to come to that point, God also knows how incredible difficult (stubborn) I can be. But eventually I get there. That carried me thru some of those tough parent times. So imagine the conversations I had with myself when we decided to adopt. (don't worry I rarely answer myself) when I let my heart answer without letting my brain analyze every aspect. I remember one night seeing an ad for Florida, "come stay with us" it said. I recall my grumpy little attitude thinking "well that's not going to happen" and then "why not?" drifted thru my mind. I remember thinking there are 101 reasons why not, and then realized I couldn't list one. With that enlightening thought my mind was soon filled with thoughts like these "They could travel with you, think of the experiences you would share. You are not the young, unsure person you were twenty years ago. There really isn't anything you couldn't do, if it was what you truly wanted to do. So stop being afraid" Once I let go of my focus on "me" it was amazing how differently I viewed things. I often imagine after moments like this that God simply shakes his head and thinks oiy! that is stubborn one. Like I said, just in case you thought I was this terrific person for adopting these three little wonders, I thought I should share just how human I am.

God knew I would question and patiently waited as I worked thru each and every question.

When we were first approached with the news of another baby the question of "would you take it?" quickly followed. Once again there was no hesitation, they were family and no matter what the outcome they needed to be together and "yes of course we would adopt all three" was the answer to the next question. I think I will always wonder at the way God answers the tiniest of prayers. It is no secret that I would have had more children. That even knowing I had been blessed with the most amazing three little people, that being their mom was my greatest gift, it didn't stop that tiny little thought every now and again of "I should have had another." As I soaked up the wonder and joy that is a newborn baby I marveled at how God had answered my prayer with not one but three little wonders. (and once or twice I may have wondered at God's sense of humor in answering that prayer 20 years later) Who gets that chance? Who is blessed with three little miracles, when they were certain they were done raising babies? Who knew.

Yeah God knew.

What led us down that road to adoption, where at times a completion to that journey did not seem possible? Where daily we wondered if we would see their next birthday, their graduation, their weddings, their life. "How do you do it?" has been asked in countless ways. That answer is simply, we didn't do "it" alone. God walked with us, every step, every breathe, every moment. God placed people in our lives along every step of the way. If you are reading this there is a good chance you are one of those people. Some prayed for us, others quietly listened, or offered an encouraging word, a hug. Some ranted right along with us, and celebrated each happy bit of happy news. Did I know how difficult the road would be, did I realize that at times it would feel like a battle, did I know I would become as comfortable in a courtroom as in my own home, or did I know that my very person would be questioned time and time again. Did I have any idea the length of time this journey would take?
Of course not, but God knew.

The day they arrived when I had my first look at yahaira and my body was filled with fear, and questions, and worries, I remember looking at my mother in law and saying "What have I agreed to?" "I have no idea how to take care of a baby with these kind of injuries" "What if I hurt her, with my stupidity?" She looked at me and said "She needs you, you can do this" and maybe therein lies the simplest of answers.......

They needed us, and we needed them too.

One bible verse that I have returned to time and time again, when my heart was heavy, or worried, or scared was Psalm 139 13-16. It's worth reading the passage in it's entirety, but to give you the overall message is simply this, God knew. Before we were born God knew our story.

It's that time...

the rainbows have returned to my kitchen.
For a time during the winter the sun does not sufficiently reach my kitchen window, where a prism hangs, thus no rainbows.
Yesterday as I walked thru the kitchen I noticed the most wonderful display of color and light on my cupboard.
It truly is a day to celebrate, the return of the rainbows...it only means one thing.
Warm weather is returning...and how can one not have a great day when presented with such a cheerful display as rainbows dancing on your cupboards each morning?

pure wonderfulness....

This baking last night filled my house with the most amazing smell...
I think most were stalking the oven just waiting for the bread to be finished.
It tasted as amazing as it smelled. It's a new recipe using and old favorite. I have often made Beer Bread for get to together or holiday's, it's perfect to use with dips. From first discovering it in the Tastefully Simply catalog years ago, it is the one thing I always purchase when ever I see a booth. Tuesday I went to a Tastefully Simply home show, where we sampled an incredible assortment of foods (seriously do not eat before attending a home show)
When the beer bread mix was presented, the demonstrator suggested a few alternative recipes. Pictured above is one of them.
Stirring in white chocolate chips and using Vanilla Coke in place of the beer. I was unable to find Vanilla Coke in my little town, so I tried Cherry coke. The result...pure wonderfulness!

Valentine party...

so much excitement...
an afternoon filled with laughter,
and oooh's and ahhhh's as each little valentine was open.
Loved watching them enjoy the party, the candy, the fun.
Loved seeing the wobbly names on each valentine given to me with the biggest smile
on their faces.

Excuse me?

I have this thing when one of my kids says something in a voice, or tone, or with attitude, that I don't like I will say
"Excuse me?"
which of course means:
Excuse me...you did not just use that tone of voice with me.
....seriously you did not just demand that of me.
.....are you kidding me, I am so not going to give into your whiny crabby voice right now.
(so you can see why I use the simple "Excuse me" saves on me needing to speak a lot of words and naturally they don't have to pretend to listen to all those words.)
Last night the little wonder above was getting ready for bed, I apparently was exhibiting a bit of attitude, she asked if she could have chocolate for supper. my reply of "when pigs fly" apparently didn't sit well with her, since she turned, put her hand on her hip and said excuse me?
to which I repeated my response (which by the way is exactly what they do to me)
where next she said excuse me? paired with "the" look. You know the one that says any one of those responses listed above.

I kid you not...

I laughed, at that moment, in that place, I simply laughed as I looked at a mini replica of me and wondered if I have been that good of a teacher, or that bad of a parent.

You let...

your daughter drink coffee?
was the question asked of me Saturday by the kind lady sitting next to me at the library.
Not even realizing that the little wonder was consuming my hot chocolate I had to actually switch gears to see what this person was commenting on...and above is what I saw.
Sigh...I explained that no it was hot chocolate, and added that I'm not a coffee drinker, love the smell not so much the taste.
Next ensued a lengthy conversation about how she too was not a coffee drinker and that her children do drink coffee and a few other random pieces of information that I have at this point forgotten. I have to admit I was perhaps not too focused after discovering the above picture and during much of the following conversation I was trying to gage just how much the little wonder was drinking and if indeed there would be any left for me. Sharing is highly over rated.

fish houses...

"Mom" said Yahaira "Why are there little house on the lake?"
"Oh, those are fish houses" I said as we drove by the lake the other day.
(I simply love driving or walking by our lake and make a point to venture by there every chance I get)
Overheard Yahaira saying to Anthony a moment later "Do you suppose our fish has house on the lake too?"

Breakfast at the library...

Saturday morning our local library held a story time with author Jill Kalz. She read two of her books Farmer Cap, and Henry Shortbill swallows the Sun. The kids were excited to eat breakfast at the library and loved picking out their own little box of cereal and then watching as the box magically turned into a bowl. Their favorite story was about Henry Shortbill. After the story time they were able to meet the author and she signed a book for them. So exciting! We have read Henry Shortbill Swallows the Sun countless times since yesterday morning. I think it is on it's way to being the current favorite book in our house.

New car seat

she has moved up to the next size car seat.
(Really who said she can grow up?)
Here she is checking it out, she quickly said it was perfect!
the part she especially liked...

the built in lights.
Yes I'm afraid that even car seats are becoming a bit high tech.

February 5th

DO YOU SEE WHERE WE ARE????
Yes! we are outdoors and it's the beginning of February.
Life is so amazing when being outdoors is a part of our day.

the face I get

when she knows I'm trying to take her pic.
This could get interesting.
What the picture doesn't show is that she is standing on a stool. Because there is no sound you wouldn't know that
she was until she saw the camera singing at the top of her lungs along with the cd player. Nor would you know she can hit repeat and thus we get to listen to the same song over and over and over again. We are her audience, the world is her stage. You know I think I want to be three again.

one fish

last night = almost no fish.
Twice in the last month Kevin has almost killed this fish.
It's Cassandra's fish by the way, she apparently trusts us to care for it while she is away at school. (she may want to rethink that trust)
Last nights drama involved the above fish, that plant in the picture, the sink, and the garbage disposal.
In his quest to clean the fishes bowl, Kevin pulled the plant out plopped it in the sink and then returned to the fish bowl to remove the fish only to discover there was no fish. (I will spare you his creative use of the English language when he discovered this) the fish was in the roots of the plant and naturally when the plant hit the sink the fish went to the lowest point, yeah that would be the disposal. Next involved Kevin attempting to catch the fish and even more creative use of the English language. Once the fish was returned to his bowl it swam laps that would have won an Olympic medal :) Thinking the fish was a bit stressed, pretty sure Kevin was too. Whenever Kevin went near the fish bowl the fish hid...seriously it did.
Loved Josh and Beckie's responses to my text, they know their father so well.
Cassandra took the news better than expected, she did tell her father to stay away from the fish (good advice) and as you can see Cassandra your fish is still swimming and apparently once again survived an encounter with your father.

More felt food f un....

Our order of felt food arrived in the mail today...the girls have not moved from the table for hours as they have cooked and served and played with all these wonderful creations. Take a peek at the cookies Yahaira is holding, yes that would be her and Rosie's name on a cookie, love that the creator of these personalized them for us...loved seeing Yahaira's excited face when she first saw her name on a cookie. I can not say enough about discovering felt food, I love how it holds up, love that i can toss it in the washer when it's needed, love that it is safe for my little ones to play with. Rosie was drooling when she saw the pancakes (her current favorite food) they do look amazing. I found these at a wonderful little etsy shop called The Little Love Bug.

Freeze your caboose off...

winter carnival 4 mile run.
Cassandra and Beckie participated in this yesterday.
Neither has ran in a competition before.
Neither has ran outdoors in the winter before.
Neither had any idea what they were about to undertake.
and yet they signed up and said why not?
Linette,Gracie, and I were at the starting line to snap a picture then planned to head to the 1/2 way point to snap
a few more pics...they were already approaching the 1/2 way point by the time we drove to it...what is that?
So amazed that they did this, and finished it
So proud of how they challenged themselves.
so glad they didn't ask me to run.
:)

Danceline Extravaganza

Saturday night was the 16th annual danceline extravaganza.
This was your third year participating in this annual event. (you were 2 1/2 that first year)
You were so excited to be dancing with the "big" girls. Often on Saturday I would see you practicing your moves.
One part of the program is the introduction of alumni, Cassandra reluctantly took the stage, along with quite a few other alumni.
and it would seem that the Haycraft's were quite lucky when it came to the raffle drawing...we even won one of the items I donated :)

Winter Carnival parade...

waiting....
it was an awesome day for a parade the temp was still in the 40's when parade time rolled around.
Yahaira fell asleep on the way to the parade route (a whole 5 min. drive)

and here is the parade all 5 minutes of it (they even drove real ssssllllllloooooooowwwww) and it still took only 5 minutes.
Anthony is in the fire truck he is the orange spot near the front, apparently as I snapped the picture he decided to reach for something on the floor. Did you notice how light it still was as the parade began? Official start time 5:30 pm....loving the fact that it is getting dark later and later.
